Upcycling is on the verge of becoming a pan-European trend. Heimtextil is holding its ‘Young Creations Award: Upcycling’ competition for young designers for the third time. And, for the first time, the competition is being opened to universities from all over Europe. On the occasion of the next Heimtextil (14 to 17 January 2015), up-and-coming designers are called upon to create upcycling products for indoor use. Students and graduates of design and interior architecture can now enter for the competition online at www.heimtextil-award.com.

“In view of the increased number of entries, the great interest shown in design by visitors and exhibitors and the positive echo from the media, we have decided to open up the competition to universities from all over Europe on the occasion of Heimtextil 2015”, says Heimtextil Director Ulrike Wechsung. Earlier this year, four German universities — Fachhochschule Aachen, Hochschule Coburg, Hochschule für Technik Stuttgart and Kunsthochschule Weissensee — took part in the competition. In 2015, design academies from all over Europe will be invited to take part. The prizes for the winners are worth a total of ? 5,000.

Recycling with value added
The ‘Young Creations Award: Upcycling’ illuminates the subjects of textiles, sustainability and design whereby the emphasis is now more than ever before on the textile character of the projects, i.e., textiles must account for at least 30 percent of the materials used. In distinction to recycling, the aim of upcycling is to create higher-value products from waste products. “Upcycling is recycling with value added’, explains Ulrike Wechsung. “And behind it is a resource-friendly approach offering great freedom for inspiration.” With the competition, Heimtextil not only helps young designers but also spotlights an innovative trend in the field of interior design, which reveals unused potential for sustainable material procurement and production.

Expert jury and Heimtextil visitors to vote on the best designs
Selected competition entries will be shown on a special area of Hall 4.2 during Heimtextil 2015. In addition to the Jury Award, there will also be a Visitor Award. The jury is made up of design and recycling experts from the textile and furnishing sectors. The Jury Award will be presented at 16.30 hrs. on 14 January. The winner of the Visitor Award will be announced on 16 January.
